What if... you had a circle of spiritual friends with whom you could talk about your money and your faith?

What if... challenging issues about money could be engaged openly, respectfully, and without judgment; so that the clarity of the Holy Spirit can emerge and lead?

Often wealthy Christians who are asking questions about economic justice and who are trying to discern what God is calling them to do with their wealth lack spiritual community around these issues. Our retreats are an opportunity for Christians of wealth to get to know each other and Harvest Time staff in a safe, non-judgmental environment. It is here we offer a genuine network of support, encouragement, challenge and inspiration as we strive to become more faithful disciples.

During our time together we will:

  • Pray with Scripture passages that specifically deal with money.
  • Share about where we are with Jesus and with money.
  • Rest
  • Listen to each other's stories.
  • Take time to be outside in nature.
  • Pay attention to the wisdom of our bodies.
  • Engage our creativity and playfulness to balance the more linear deliberations that typically dominate our engagement with money.

Examples of guiding Scripture:

  • John 12: The Anointing in Bethany
    Money and Extravagant Love
  • Mark 10: The Rich Ruler
All things are possible for God

Examples of the kinds of questions we explore together:

  • Where are you with Jesus at this stage of your life?
  • How do you experience Christ’s presence?
  • Which of Jesus’ economic challenges are stirring in your heart?
  • Are you longing to respond to Jesus and to the needs of the world with your wealth? Are you already doing this? What might be keeping you from responding even more deeply? What would help you become free to respond more deeply?

Values we associate with this process:

  • Listening – to the Spirit, ourselves and the wisdom of community.
  • Hospitality – together we will attempt to create a circle where it is safe for the soul to show up.
  • Humility and Authenticity – We will welcome the hard, uncomfortable emotions, assumptions, and projections that may get kicked up in this process with compassion and curiosity – knowing that sometimes what we most need to hear is what we may be tempted to ignore or silence.
  • Mutuality and Respect – We will welcome with gratitude the gifts and insight of all those called to sit in this circle.
  • Justice – Our hope is serving the God of love who hears the cries of all people, and who invites us to come together to co-create a world where all have enough.
  • Extravagant Love – As with all Harvest Time circles, we hope that extravagant love will be the fragrance found in the room. We will treat ourselves and others with compassion and will put love ahead of our need to be or do things right.
  • Gratitude and Joy – We will savor and celebrate moments of grace.

Comments from participants about their experiences in Harvest Time circles:

"I found a way to weave together the part of me that cares about social justice with the part of me that was born into money so that I can live with integrity."

"I have been able to discern and express my clear yes's and no's."

"I felt known and deeply accepted. This is where support exists to find alternatives to what is usually done and to know we're not crazy."

"I have been able to shift the way money moves through my life including how I earn, receive, spend, invest and give money. Where I used to feel stuck, now I feel free."

"I have learned how to participate in community authentically, even when things get difficult."

"I have shifted the way I give money from writing checks to charities to participating in friendships and partnerships where I am both giving and receiving."

"The journey with money is fundamentally a journey into the heart of God. By engaging our questions and concerns about money in the light of our faith and community, we create a sacred space in which the Holy Spirit can gently and definitively uproot one of our favorite idols - money - and replace it with a radical trust in the love of God. When that happens, hearts burst open and the flow of money to and through us is radically transformed. Our resources are no longer peripheral or even impediments to our walk with Christ, but icons that draw us, our communities, and our economic systems deeper into the heart of God's grace." - Rosemary Feerick
